Kenawa Island is a tiny, uninhabited island off the northwest tip of Sumbawa, just across the Alas Strait from East Lombok — which is exactly why it works as the first stop on a Lombok to Komodo sailing trip. As of 2026 it remains undeveloped: no resorts, no warungs you can rely on, just a white sandbank, shallow reef, and a single savanna hill with a 360-degree view. What Is There Actually to Do on Kenawa Island?
Two things, and both are worth doing. First, the sandbank: a pale spit of sand extending off the island into turquoise shallows. At lower tide it stretches out far enough to walk along with water on both sides — this is where most passengers spend the first twenty minutes.
Second, the savanna hill hike. A single grassy hill rises from the center of the island, and the trail to the top is short — typically 15 to 20 minutes at an easy pace. There is no shade on the way up, so go early in the stop, bring water, and wear sandals or shoes rather than going barefoot; the dry-season grass is sharp. From the summit you get the classic Kenawa Island Sumbawa panorama: the sandbank curving below you, the Alas Strait behind it, and on clear mornings the silhouette of Mount Rinjani across the water on the Lombok side.
Can You Swim and Snorkel at Kenawa?
Yes — on the sheltered side. The water off the sandbank and near the old jetty is calm, shallow, and comfortable for swimmers of any level. Snorkelers will find seagrass beds and patchy coral with small reef fish close to shore; it is a gentle warm-up snorkel rather than a highlight reef, which is fine, because the serious snorkeling on this route comes later at Saleh Bay with its whale sharks and in Komodo National Park itself. One caution: the Alas Strait carries real current off the exposed points of the island, so stay on the side your crew indicates and do not swim out past the sandbank tip alone.
